Basis For Calculation
The calculations take into account the wind load occurring on the tree crown surface, the material properties of green wood and the trunk geometry.
The calculated wind load assumptions in treecalc are based on the current EN standard 1991-4-1/NA:2012-12. The material properties of green wood used are taken from all currently available sources, e.g. „Stuttgarter Festigkeitskatalog" (Wessolly & Erb 1998), extensive studies from England by Gwendolyne Lavers (Lavers 1983), the Wood HandBook (USDA Forestry Service 2010) and a data collection from Canada (Jessome 1977).
The influence of cavities, notches and openings in tree trunks on traffic safety can also be estimated using the beam theory (cf. Koizumi & Hirai 2006).
As a result, the calculated safety factor of the examined tree is displayed and, if pruning is feasible, a pruning contour of the crown is also shown, with specific details of the pruning parameters in m and %. In cases where pruning would impair the tree's ability to survive to such an extent that the remaining service life would be shortened, felling is recommended.
Limitations
treecalc.com can only ever be a supplementary source of information in connection with a visual tree inspection. treecalc.com is designed for experienced users with solid training in arboriculture who also have basic knowledge of tree statics.
The method offered here for estimating the traffic safety of trees supports the user in assessing the breakage safety of free-standing trees from a diameter of 40 cm. The fracture safety of younger trees or trees in groups or even forest stands cannot be reliably estimated using this method.
